New study could lead to more efficient, environmentally friendly batteries. A computer virus won't help your laptop work — but a biological virus could. Tweaking their genes just so could engineer viruses for making the rechargeable lithium ion batteries that power devices such as laptops, iPods and cell phones, researchers report online April 2 in Science.
I don't know enough of the Biology to understand the M13 virus they used to make this initial virus battery, but it sure is fascinating and a bit scary. Where does the M13 virus come from originally? The idea of environmentally friendly, long lasting batteries is wonderful, but are there any risks? Are there any virologists out there that know?
